Spyder3Print 3.5b9 (Public Beta) for OSX and Windows, July 2, 2008 PrintFIX PRO 2.0 -> PrintFIX PRO 2.1 -> Spyder3Print Update Notes Key: (Both) = OSX + Win, (OSX) = OSX only, (Win) = Windows only ************************************* Spyder3Print 3.5 ************************************* PLEASE READ before installing Spyder3Print 3.5 as an update from an earlier PrintFIX PRO version! (Both): DO THIS FIRST: Any measurement files you've previously created will be in your older PrintFIX PRO :Data:PRO subfolder. (If you have PrintFIX PRO 2.0 or later already installed, you can use the "File:Open Data" command to open and view the contents of this folder, once PrintFIX PRO is running). PLEASE MAKE COPIES of your existing measurement .xml files before you continue! After you've run the Spyder3Print installer, use Spyder3Print's "File:Open Data" command to open the new measurement files folder, and copy your measurement files back into it. There have been no changes in any of the file formats; all measurement files created with older versions of PrintFIX PRO software are 100% compatible with Spyder3Print. The same comment applies to the contents of PrintFIX PRO's "Export" folder. If you've used the Average or Export commands, or have exported measurements to use with QTR or CreateICC, make sure you backup, and then recopy, the contents of these folder for use with Spyder3Print as well. NOTE: The "PRO" subfolder has been replaced with a "Print" subfolder in the new software; this is where you will copy your measurement files to. (Both): All existing PrintFIX PRO serial numbers will work with Spyder3Print. As with all previous versions of the software, this is a free upgrade. You will need to re-enter your FULL serial from PrintFIX PRO to initialize and run the new software. NOTE: PrintFIX PRO serial numbers start with 890. NOTE: PrintFIX PLUS serial numbers (which start with 889) will NOT work with Spyder3Print. You can only use Spyder3Print if you have a Datacolor 1005 spectrocolorimeter as part of a previous installation of PrintFIX PRO or Spyder3Print. NOTE: You must enter the dashes (-) between the number groups for the serial number to work. NOTE: You must enter all of the trailing digits from the FULL serial for PFP or S3P. The serial number will NOT work if you enter the X'd out digits (...XXXX) that are shown in the "About" dialog. You need the FULL serial (all digits, in 3 groups, separated by dashes) for it to work. (OSX) Your Applications folder will contain a "PrintFIX PRO" folder that was specifically named for the PFP version that you had previously installed (such as "PrintFIX PRO 2.1"). You can simply run the Spyder3Print 3.5 installer, without deleting any older PrintFIX PRO application folder you may have been using, and a "Spyder3Print 3.5" folder (Changed, from the 3.0 folder in pre-3.5b9 versions) will be created in Applications:Datacolor. You can continue to run either the older PrintFIX PRO software out of its own folder as well as Spyder3Print out of the new Datacolor subfolder in your Applications folder. Multiple installations are completely "separate" and will not interfere with each other. OSX users don't need to unplug or replug the spectro during installation. (OSX) For Spyder3Print 3.5b9 Public Beta and later: see the notes below about the new location for storage of measurement files. If you copy older measurement files from their original locations into a given user's {Home Folder}:Library:Preferences:DataColor:Spyder3Print:Data:Print, they will be immediately seen in the new software when you run it from that user account. (Win) We recommend going to the Start menu, Colorvision section (for previous installs of PrintFIX PRO) or Datacolor section (for previous installs of Spyder3Print), and doing an Uninstall of your older version of software first (with the spectro unplugged). Then run the new Spyder3Print installer. The software will go into a new Spyder3Print application folder (which will be in a new Datacolor subfolder in Program Files) and you will see a new set of items in the Start menu. ********************* Changes in Spyder3Print 3.5b9 (Public Beta) ********************* - (Both): The main application now installs into a Spyder3Print 3.5 folder. (All of the previous Spyder3Print versions, up through the first 3.5 "public beta", installed into a Spyder3Print 3.0 folder). - (OSX): Made changes to where the working data files (measurement files, exported files, etc) are stored. These will no longer go in the main (global) Applications folder area, as this could cause problems on systems with multiple user accounts, when some of the accounts were not administrator accounts. Instead, the Data and Export folders are moved into the user's Home folder area when Spyder3Print 3.5b9 or later is first launched, (if those folders do not already exist there). Every user account that runs Spyder3Print 3.5b9 or later, on a given system, will end up with its own set of measurement files, and also it's own locally stored copy of preference and "remembered" settings of the state of the software. - (Both): On the Welcome screen, moved the Advanced workflow to the top, and made it the default. NOTE that the Advanced workflow means: everything in Spyder3Print works the same as in previous versions... all user interface screens, profile building options, etc. - (Both): Labelled and grouped the new "Easy" workflows below that, to make it clear that they belong together and that they signify a shortened worfklow. - (Both): Changed the text labelling of the workflow choices on the Welcome screen, for better clarity. - (Both): Added dialogs (which you can ask not to be shown again) after clicking Next from the Welcome screen, which provide additional details about the differences between the "Advanced" workflow and the new "Easy" workflows which appear below. - (OSX): When building profiles, changed the default destination for profiles to "this user only" (the Library\ColorSync Profiles in the user's Home folder). - (Both): Changed/enhanced/added to the text on the Configure Printer Settings screen, for more information and clarity. - (Both): The simplified workflows from the Welcome screen now includes the Configure Printer Settings screen, for better documentation. - (Both): The installers are now half as large as they've been in the past, thanks to "slimmed down" Help files. - (Both): Measuring speed has been increased again (faster than the first 3.5 public beta, which itself was much faster than any of the previous versions). - (OSX): Fixed a problem in the installer which could cause languages to appear in the wrong order in one of the language selection popups. - (Vista): Fixed a number of cosmetic bugs in how some of the buttons, controls, and text appeared in the user interface screens. - (Win): Fixed a problem with text color for some of the Advanced slider labels. ********************* Changes in Spyder3Print 3.5b8 (Public Beta) ********************* - This isn't a software change, but a good way to notify everyone about the availability of the first demo videos for Spyder3Print. Please visit: http://spyder.datacolor.com/learn_videos.php You can watch demos on using Spyder3Print overall, and also how to specifically turn off color management in 4 different printer driver and OS configuration. More videos will be added to this page in the future. Now: on to the software changes in Spyder3Print 3.5b8... - (Both) Added a set of pictures, and rectangular backgrounds, to the new "Easy/Advanced" radio button set on the Welcome screen. - (Both) When you go back to the Welcome screen, you're always given the "Easy/Advanced" radio buttons. (In the previous 3.5b6 and 3.5b7 builds, if you chose Advanced mode, you would have to quit and restart Spyder3Print to get back to the radio buttons on the Welcome screen again) - (Win) Fixed a bug where, in the Tools:Measure dialog, the text label for the Linearization button was invisible. - (Win) Changed the command that gets you "out" of Spyder3Print from Exit to Quit. ********************* Changes in Spyder3Print 3.5b7 ********************* - (Both) Added translations in all languages for the new features in version 3.5b6. - No other changes. ********************* Changes in Spyder3Print 3.5b6 ********************* - (Both) The measuring speed of the Datacolor 1005 spectro is now approximately FOUR TIMES (4X) faster than with all previous versions of PrintFIX PRO and Spyder3Print. We think you'll be extremely pleased by this...! When you measure, you'll notice a significant decrease in the time between the measurement "start" and "end" clicks; that's your increase in measurement speed, which translates to a very noticeable decrease in total measuring time. You'll find that you can measure the targets much more quickly this way than with any previous version. A good approximation is that you can probably measure, overall, in about half the time that it took you in the past. To take best advantage of this, we recommend using the Enter or Return keys, on your keyboard, to measure with the spectro, rather than pressing down on the nose. You'll find that tapping Return, on your keyboard, with one hand, while sliding the spectro on the target with the other hand is the fastest way to measure. If you're very good at this (as well as careful), you may be able to measure the 225 patch target in as little as 2 1/2 minutes and the 729 patch target in as little as 9 minutes. Note: going too fast means that it's more likely you can make errors while measuring, either by moving the spectro too soon and sliding it across gaps while still measuring, or picking up the tip slightly while the measurement is starting or ending. Practice measuring more quickly, and watch your patch measurements, to get a feel for how quickly you can move the spectro and tap a key to take measurements without inducing errors. The best way to measure and check your measurements is to switch the Target window from Split to Measured mode, every time you measure a target. - (Both) There's a new "500 patch", 2 page target, which comes from combining the earlier 225 patch color target and the 238 Extended Grays. (This only adds up to 463 actual patches to measure, but 500 sounds better and is easier to remember). In the new "Easy" mode (see below), this is called the "500 Patch Target", and in "Advanced" mode it's called "High Quality Target plus Grays". (The naming is different, but the target is the same). This target makes it much simpler to print, measure and build a profile from 225 colors plus 238 extended grays, because: - On the Select Target screen, you select only this target; then use the Page popup to flip from page 1 to page 2. You print each page separately, but you don't have to reselect a different target to do so. (This is the same concept that's been used all along with the 729 patch, 3 page target). - All of the measurements are stored in the same file. After you've printed, you'll measure starting with the colors, and then finishing with the grays, into a 2 page Target window. - After you've measured, you only need to select this 2 page measurement file to build from. (unlike the past, where you had to separately select a colors and grays measurement file, which some people found confusing). You can then proceed through the "Build" screen and all of the colors and grays measurements will be used together automatically. - Note: the old method of combining two different measurement files to build a profile (a colors file and an extended grays file) is still supported, so any existing "legacy" measurement files that you may still have are still usable. Starting with Spyder3Print 3.5, however, we recommend using the new 2 page target for using 225 colors with 238 grays. - Note: You'll still have to use the "separate file" approach to measure and build from 729 patches and 238 grays. - (Both) We've added a new workflow for building profiles that simplifies the Wizard screens and controls down to only the essentials: - When you first launch the software, the Welcome screen now provides a set of "Easy" choices: - Easy Profiling with 150 patches - Easy Profiling with 225 patches - Easy Profiling with 500 patches (which really means: 225 patches + 238 extended grays) - Advanced Profilng with Full Options - If you choosed "Advanced Profiling" and click Next, Spyder3Print's workflow will be essentially the same as in all previous versions. The Welcome screen will redraw itself, without the workflow radio buttons, and you can step through all of the Wizard, screens just as in the past. - If you choose an "Easy" profiling workflow, then things get much simpler. When you click Next, this is what will happen: - The next screen you'll see is a much-simplified screen called "Print Target", with a large preview of the Target you've selected, and the ability to do Page Setup and Print from it. There's also some new explanatory text next to the large Target preview. - After that, you're asked to calibrate the spectro, just as in the past. - Afer that, you're on a much-simplified screen called "Measure and Build Profile". There's a single button to prompt you for a single name that will be used for both the measurement profile, and the profile you build. After you click and choose a name, you'll immediately be presented with the Target window, and you can measure into this the usual way. After you've finished and have closed the window, you'll get a large preview of the measurements. Clicking "Next" at this point will simply build a profile from the measurements. (So you don't see the more advanced "Build Profile" screen; you don't see any of the basic or advanced adjustment sliders; or any of the profile building controls. When you build, all of the sliders are effectively zeroed, and all of the other controls are set to their normal "default" values) - The profile builds, with no further intervention, and then you're immediately put into the SpyderProof screen. - (Both): After the SpyderProof screen, clicking "Next" now puts you on a new Wizard screen that tells you about the profile that you just built. - The "Next" button on this screen will now perform your choice of: - Edit (Advanced): This will take you to the "Build Profile" screen in "Advanced" mode. If you've gotten here by building a profile using the new Easy workflow, this will switch you back to Advanced mode again, and you'll have the full set of "Build" controls available, including all of the Basic and Advanced sliders, etc. This is the quickest way to get here after using Easy mode, so that you don't have to go back through all of the Wizard screens again. - Calibrate Again: This will take you all the way back to the first Welcome screen, and you'll see the new set of Workflow radio buttons again. - Quit: This will do the obvious. - The "Back" button will take you back to the Wizard page for taking measurements. - (Both): On the "Build Profile" screen, in "Advanced" mode (the older way of doing things, where all of the adjustment sliders are shown: at the top of the screen, you're now told exactly which measurement file(s) will be used to build the profile. If you're building from a single file, (whichever target), it will tell you so. If you're building from a combination of a colors file and an extended grays file, it will tell you that, as well. This extra feedback gives you a way of visually confirming what's going to happen when you Build. - (Both): There is now an extra text prompt on the Select Target screen that tells you to print each page of the target, if you've selected a multi-page target. - (Both): The "Use Extended Gray" checkbox and popup menu are enabled ONLY when the colors-only 150, 225, or either of the 729 patch targets are selected in the main popup. If you select the new 2 page target, or the standalone (older) extended grays target measurements in the list, both controls are displayed, but disabled, so that you can't accidentally select them. - (Both): Another new feature: After you've used Spyder3Print to print at least one page of a target: on the next launch, it will remember that you did this in the previous session, and will ask if you want to skip ahead and start measuring the target immediately. If you say "yes", then it will make sure you have a spectro attached (if not, you'll be warned and left on the Welcome screen) and then jump you straight ahead to the spectro calibration screen, followed by the measurements screen. (In the older "Advanced" mode, this is a quick way of bypassing all of the in-between Wizard screens). - (Both): On the Read Patches screen (in the older "Advanced" mode), there's now a popup that lets you immediately switch to a different target template, before you click "Save Measurements To..." to create a measurements file prior to measuring in a target window. This lets you switch templates without leaving the "Read Patches" screen. (In previous versions, you needed to click "Back" to return to the "Select Target" screen; switch templates using the radio buttons; and then click Next to return to the "Read Patches" screen) - (Both): If you click Page Setup on the Target screen (to check page setup before printing the next page of a multi-page target, for instance): the target no longer gets reset to the first page. This prevents you from accidentally printing the first page of the target again. - Note: New features in this build were in English only, so if you installed a translated version, all of the previous text would be in the appropriate language, but text for new features would show up in English. ********************* Changes in Spyder3Print 3.0.1 (OSX only!) ********************* - This installer creates and/or overwrites some of the contents of the folder named "Spyder3Print 3.0" in your Applications:Datacolor folder. This is normal, as only a few files have changed since the 3.0 version. If you had a previously installed 3.0 version, these are the files that will be updated: - The Spyder3Print application goes from 3.0 to 3.0.1 - A copy of the SpyderProof "matrix" image of 16 sample images is added to the Test Images folder, if this installation updates a previous 3.0 installation. if this is a "fresh" install, the Test Images folder will ONLY contain the "matrix" image. Note: the 3.0.1 installer will NOT delete the older "Test Images" folder contents if you already have 3.0 installed. - All other support files and subfolder contents remain the same. *** Spyder3Print 3.0.1 application changes: - Fixes for cosmetic problems in the user interface when running under OSX 10.5 or later (Leopard), to prevent flashing and inverting of the main user interface when certain prompt dialogs are displayed in front of it. ********************* Changes in Spyder3Print 3.0 (OSX and Windows) ********************* *** New features *** - The user interface has been updated with the new "look" for the Spyder3Elite and Spyder3Print products, and Datacolor is now being used for the product naming. - The new SpyderProof(tm) softproofing image display and mechanism are improvements for the older PrintFIX PRO softproofing feature. You now have a matrix of 16 high quality images at your disposal for softproofing. Clicking on any corner quadrant area zooms you in one level, so that only the 4 images from that quadrant are visible. Clicking again on any image in that group isolates that image only. One more click brings you back to the top level, where all 16 images are visible. Click on the "Large Preview" button to expand the current softproof display into a full-size window that's shaped according to your page setup shape and which also shows you the border printing area, as in older versions of PrintFIX PRO. Page Setup, Print, and the softproofing controls work as they have in the past. - The image files for the new softproofing feature are located in the new "Proof" folder which is at the same level as the Spyder3Print application. - Softproofing is much faster than in the previous versions of PrintFIX PRO. - New item in Preferences for "L-Star workflow". - Added a full translation of the application, Help files, and installation in Russian. - If you attempt to select Portrait mode rather than Landscape, during Page Setup, Spyder3Print will detect this and warn you. - The software installs, by default, into a "Spyder3Print" folder in a "Datacolor" folder. In OSX, the Datacolor folder is in Applications; in Windows, in Program Files. The new Spyder3Elite software also installs into its own named subfolder in the Datacolor folder. So, if you have both Spyder3Print and Spyder3Elite installed, you will see their subfolders next to each other. - The measurements files are now stored in a "Print" subfolder in the Data folder (this replaces the "PRO" subfolder from the earlier versions of PrintFIX PRO). If you have any older measurement files, just copy them into this folder to make them available in Spyder3Print. - Completely updated Help files for both English and Russian. Other language installs will get a slightly modified version of the older PrintFIX PRO 2.1 Help in that language. There will be further Help file updates in the future. - (OSX): Uses "sheets" for most alerts, rather than dialog windows. (Better cosmetics) *** Fixes *** - The Average command will now work properly with Extended Gray measurement files. - Exporting measurements to a QTR linearization file now puts the proper keyword into the file. - Fixed a problem with the wrong text label being shown, in the Ref White/Ref Black feature. ********************* Changes from PrintFIX PRO 2.0 to PrintFIX PRO 2.1 ********************* - (Win): Vista compatibility. - (Win): The Print button on various UI screens now brings up the full Windows print dialog. You can access printer driver settings here directly. Note: in Vista, this is the ONLY place to adjust printer driver settings, since Printer Properties are not available in Vista's Page Setup dialog. - (Win): XP/64 fixes for some stability issues. - (Both): The Spectro Calibration screen now contains a picture of the spectro on its calibration base, as an additional reminder that the spectro must be calibrated this way (sitting in the calibration base); not on the paper white. - (Both): Updates for Help files in French, German, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. - (Both): Additional translations for warning alerts. - (Both): Various adjustments/fixes to text translations for some UI elements; in all non-English languages. - (Both): Better checking and error messages for rare cases in which certain files which are needed for proper operation are not present after installation.
