What does the blue light on the Spyder3 device mean?

"The Spyder3Utility places a small icon on the right side of the Menu Bar in OS X and in the System Tray on Windows.

This icon will be marked with either a yellow or a red slash if there is important status information to be communicated to the user. To view the status, click on the Spyder3Utility icon (right-click in Windows) and select the ""Explain"" command at the top of the menu. This will open the status dialog which will explain the current status.

If there is no yellow or red slash, this means that Spyder3Utility is running and has no important status to report.

Clicking (right-click in Windows) on the Spyder3 icon will display the Utility menu. The items in this menu allow you to view the Utility status, launch the Spyder3 software, change the Spyder3Utility preferences and measure the ambient light level.

Spyder3Utility has several functions:

1) Measures the Ambient Light Level, compares it to the level that existed when calibration was performed and issues an alert if the ambient level has changed. It is important that the ambient lighting conditions remain constant otherwise the user's perception of images that are being viewed/edited will change.

2) Reminds the user to Recalibrate on a regular schedule. The default reminder period is two weeks and this can be adjusted in the Spyder3Utility Preferences. When the display has not been recalibrated within the specified time, a dialog will be shown to notify the user of this. This dialog will then be shown every 24 hours until the display is recalibrated.

3) Monitors the Spyder Certification status of displays which the user has set this option for. Spyder Certification monitors several items for each display:
A) confirms that the Default Monitor Profile is a Datacolor created profile
B) verifies that the Default Monitor Profile was created using the Target that was set when Certification was specified
C) confirms that calibration has been checked (CheckCAL) within the period specified in the Spyder3Utility Preferences (default is 1 Week)
D) confirms that full calibration (FullCAL) has been performed within the period specified in the Spyder3Utility Preferences (default is 6 Months)

Spyder Certification is enabled/disabled for a display within the Spyder3 settings (e.g. Spyder3Elite/Spyder3Pro Current Settings screen displays the value (yes/no) that is set for Spyder Certification on each display. To change the Spyder Certification setting for a display, launch the Spyder3 software, select ""Current Settings"" from the ""Go"" menu, mark the radio button ""change these settings"", click Next until you arrive at the Select Spyder Certification screen, change the setting as desired and then click Next until you return to the Current Settings screen.

Additionally, on Windows, the Spyder3Utility loads the calibration data from the Default Monitor Profile into the video card LookUp Table (LUT). Depending on the setting in the Spyder3Utility Preferences, the calibration data will be re-loaded on a regular basis. This is sometimes necessary if other applications change the video card LUT for some other function (like playing a game) and do not restore the LUT contents after they are done."
