What conditions are required for using a calibrated projector?

| Projectors react differently than monitors. Their black is defined by the degree of ambient light in the room, so the darkest possible environment offers the best possible dynamic range at the dark end. White is defined by the brightest light on screen, so a brighter projector, or one closer to the screen, offers more dynamic range at the white end. Failure occurs when there is so much ambient light in the room that other things in the field of view are significantly darker than on-screen black, or when other things in the field of view are brighter than on-screen white. As long as an environment can be maintained where the screen defines viewing field white and black, calibration and color managed viewing can successfully occur. | |
