The small squares overlaid on my target image aren’t in color; they appear to be gray. Why is this?

This is actually an optical illusion. If you use any of the alignment markers to resize your image, you will find, once they are located on a different colored background, your patches are actually quite colorful. Its just against the even more saturated background of the matching patches that they can appear gray. | |
